LG’s new DM50D LED Monitor TV based on FPR Technology

Korean manufacturer LG Electronics has recently unveiled a new range of LED Monitor. The newly introduced DM50 3D-capable monitor is equipped with an inbuilt digital TV tuner. The monitor or HDTV hybrid features LG’s passive Cinema 3D technology, popularly known as FPR (film-type patterned retarder) technology, and will appeal to those who dislike the idea of having to wear active-shutter 3D glasses which can be relatively weighty. LG’s Cinema 3D displays are composed of polarized 3D glasses which are lighter due to absence of the rechargeable batteries, thus, more comfortable to wear and do not require synchronization.

DM50 3D-capable monitor

The LG DM50D is highly capable of offering high refresh rates, and has been certified as ‘Flicker Free’ from the global research agencies Intertek and TÜV. This certification is an added advantage for the users as the product guarantees absolute reduced strain and they can completely enjoy 3D gaming and viewing. Viewers will also purportedly benefit from reduced crosstalk artefacts when watching extra-dimensional content, which is important to keep eye fatigue to a minimum. For four-eyed folks a clip-on style is available, which can simply be attached onto standard prescription lenses. According to Si-hwan Park, VP, monitor division at LG’s Home Entertainment opined, “The company had carried out research that revealed many people are not happy about wearing the more cumbersome 3D glasses, while some have concerns about their health when using these glasses.”

The monitor also has the feature of 2D to 3D conversion, which will work automatically with games. On the other hand, LED backlight technology and HDMI connectivity will come as standard. Users can watch videos from a flash drive without the need to boot up the computer thanks to the USB Quick View feature of the DM50D.

The new offering from LG effectively provides consumers with a cross between a PC monitor and a personal 3D TV. Surprisingly, the Seoul-based corporation remains coy on the actual screen size, but judging from the model number it could be either 50 inches or 50 centimetres (20 inches), with the latter being more likely given that the 3-dimensional television/monitor is meant to “fit easily on a desktop”. The LG DM50D is scheduled to hit the shelves in Europe from July before being rolled out on a global basis.

Cello inaugurates affordable 3D TV based on LG’s FPR 3D LCD technology

Subhro Prakash Ghosh

Leyburn-based Cello Electronics, British LCD TV manufacturer, has unveiled its 3D TV range in the United Kingdom. Cello claims that it has launched the UK’s most affordable 3D TV any brand has ever come up with. The brand has worked on the technology, instead of abiding by the same routs Samsung and Sony follows, on the other hand, it has looked into the price factor to offer the most affordable 3D TV.

There was some news concerning the announcement of adoption of FPR (film-type patterned retarder) technology of LG Display by some other TV giants, however, not a single brand confirmed. However, Cello is the only brand that has utilized FPR passive 3D LCD technology in order to overcome the drawbacks and difficulties related to SG technology.

Cello 3D TV

Cello 3D TV comes with 4 pair of polarized glasses, a strategy to reach the families consisting of small and large family members. According to the news sources, Cello would charge £ 19.99 for each additional set of 3D eyewear.

The plus point of using LG Display’s FPR is that it has no drawbacks such as image flickering, overlapping, retention, low response speed, narrow viewing angle, etc. Thus, FPR technology has got the honor of ‘best 3D technology’ last year at a display event held in Beijing.

View the Aroma of Television

 Sneha Mundhra

Look right or left everywhere you may find 3D infused objects today, whether it is movies, televisions, or gaming. But, how about if you can sense smell too with great visuals? The researchers from University of California and Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology based out of Korea have been working on this ‘smell-o-vision’ concept for years now.

I know it seems trivial, if we give it a thought that who actually wants to smell the dish flashing on the TV screen. However, let’s not forget that smell is considered as a powerful tool, which can stimulate memories leaving an impact on its viewers. The aroma of cookies baking will surely bring your childhood memories back. Isn’t it? Recall those childhood days, when you and mommy used to whip cookies mixture and wait eagerly for the freshly baked cookies. Therefore, the smell power is the main reason of smell-o-vision to come into vision.

Talking about this technology, it will be a small device fixed behind the TV with an ability to blow out thousands of smells. In a way, it is a revolution that we will be able to receive an immersive experience and definitely, watching cookery shows will become more interesting now.

I hope the smell-o-vision will be launched soon, as I have just bought a new 3D TV and an addition of smell feature will make my experience incredible. My 3D TV has actually made my entertainment amazing than ever and it does not affect my eyes at all. The screen brightness is superb and gives me a facility to convert 2D content into 3D. The coolest part is that it is pocket friendly and hence, I would highly recommend LG 3D TV (being a tech freak) for all of you out there.

Has 3D TV Become the Need of the Hour?

Sneha Mundhra

Has it become important today to have the latest technology at home? Maybe, definitely! Yeah, that is the tug of war in my mind. Every day new technology experts bring advanced mechanization and we, the consumers gets mesmerized to buy it.

I know what you are thinking that ‘who cares’. But in today’s life, where we all are working being updated is an imperative thing. This thought came to me, when I went to meet my filthy rich friend, since she always have the latest tech and gizmos in her home.

No wonder the launched technologies are fab but, to buy them all will burn my pocket. I belong to a media industry, where it is important to keep the track of the latest ongoing. However, this does not mean that I should have all the Apple products.

Coming back again to my meeting with my old friend; we sat in her scintillating room, which made me feel that I am seeing a dream. It was a gorgeous room, a wishful one. The aromatic candles were accentuating the objects around and the cosy couch just made me feel how much I needed it, after a hectic week. Thereafter, as I made myself comfortable she gave me spectacles to put on and my first reaction: “Sweety, my eyes are fine! Are you drunk?”

So, she smiled and replied me back: “We are about to experience something which you never must have.”
With full concentration to her words, I laid back and wohoo I was watching 3D movie in her living room. I was totally stunned with her featherweight 3D glasses and yes, the wine was amazing too.

Though, I have never been much a fan of 3D movies, as it brings tears to my eyes. For me the idea of watching 3D films in theatre is like torturing. But, it came to me as a surprise, when after 2 hours of watching 3D content, no pain, no nausea nothing happened to me.

The foremost question that popped into my mind: “When this miracle took birth?” And, as usual, she got an excuse to boast. However, it was interesting to know how technology is advancing these days in India. It was LG 3D TV to make your viewing experience fully loaded. This product has seriously allured me and I wish to buy one to make my weekends amazing than ever.

Thinking of price tag made me sad and there my friend again jumped in and told me it is quite affordable, which brought curves to my lips. 3D TV has so many functions that it can keep you occupied for the full day, if you do not wish to step out in this scorching heat. For me, it is a must buy as it has great features at reasonable price. Because I believe such opportunities, do not keep on knocking our doors, as we know the future is shaping 3D way.

Subhro P Ghosh

A recent report of a survey conducted in the UAE reveals that 51% of the total 764 surveyed respondents expressed optimistically that the potential of 3D TV penetration is immense to revolutionize the way they’re in watching TV at their residence. Whereas, over one-third of the respondents said that the thing will change more effectively with the application of 3D games.
Toshiba 3D TV

This sort of research conducted by YouGov Siraj is generally conducted to understand the inclination of customers toward the 3D TV when majority of the global market leaders are venturing into retailing 3D TV. Sharing the experience of the research, H S Paik, President of LG Electronic Gulf opined, “We asked the consumer what they considered would be the most important reason for buying a 3D TV and of those that responded, more than 65 per cent said the ability to be able to watch 3D movies was either important or very important.”

H S Paik also commented that the UAE consumers are well aware about the usage of conventional shutter glasses and its drawbacks such as image flickering and overlapping, whereas due to the presence of inbuilt rechargeable batteries, the glasses are not at all comfortable and low brightness is very common. While the customers were asked on their decision, over 85% voted for lightweight battery-free 3D glasses, variable relaxing seating positions and topmost image clarity matter a lot that would benefit with proper return-on-investment.

The new models of LG Cinema 3D TV introduced globally is based on FPR 3D technology that was achieved the honor of ‘Best 3D technology’ at a Display Event held in Beijing last year. LG’s Cinema 3D TV implemented with FPR technology has also received the ‘flicker-free’ certificate from two global certification agencies Intertek and TÜV.

LG Electronics faces scarcity in supplying its 3D TV glasses

Subhro P Ghosh

A Korean news portal has reported that supply of LG’s 3D TV glasses has come down and some of the customers who had bought LG Cinema 3D TV are not properly getting the glasses. Basically, each customer is supposed to 6-8 glasses per 3D TV set, but due to the shortage of LG’s supply, the number has come down.

According to the customers, they have got only a few glasses with the set and they will be getting the other remaining sets after about a month, and this shortage is also felt for 3D Blu-Ray titles. On the other hand, one of the senior officials of LG said, “It is true that the supply of the glasses has not been without a hitch as the domestic demands have exceeded our expectation. However, since the glass-makers are quite small in size and mass production is a kind of tall order for them, we are thinking to increase the number of suppliers.”
LG's FPR 3D glasses

However, industry experts believe that this supply shortage of the glasses is making the promotion of LG’s Cinema 3D TV, which is very new in the industry. The new Cinema 3D TV is based on FPR technology, which is yet to gain much popularity in the market competing with its major rivals Samsung and Sony. This also could be its strategy of LG to be floated in the news as its competitors are in an attempt to develop their conventional SG (shutter glasses) technology, for instance, Samsung has recently joined hand with RealD Inc. to make possible the merging of passive 3D glasses with active shutter technology.

A: A 3D TV is always different from a conventional or even LCD and LED television. A 3D TV is capable to offer you a 3D content. The main difference between 3D TV and other television is that a 3D TV has an additional chip that does the 3D rendering. The main function of this chip is displaying consecutive stereoscopic images each of 120 Hertz, if it is 240 Hertz television. However, one has to remember that for the purpose of viewing proper 3D image and get distinct 3D effect, the usage of 3D TV compatible glass is mandatory. If you want yourself to blend with the 3D effect, you should not hesitate in investing behind a 3D TV, because, you should remember, this investment is one timely made which will surely endow you with return-on-investment.

Q: Which are the 3D TV offering brands doing good in the Indian market?

A: The year 2010 witnessed the entry of three 3D TV brands in India – Samsung, Sony and Panasonic. The response that Samsung expected with its entry, including Sony and Panasonic, was never met in the time period of 1 year. Same poor performance they have shown in other countries. This is due to application of active shutter glass. According to the doctors and researchers, due to the usage of active shutter glasses, many people are suffering from health problems such as eye strain and fatigue, nausea, whereas technical problems like image flickering, retention, overlapping (technically known as crosstalk), lower brightness, etc. These are the main causes of obstruction in the 3D TV retailing business of Samsung, Sony and Panasonic.
