LG Electronics faces scarcity in supplying its 3D TV glasses

Subhro P Ghosh

A Korean news portal has reported that supply of LG’s 3D TV glasses has come down and some of the customers who had bought LG Cinema 3D TV are not properly getting the glasses. Basically, each customer is supposed to 6-8 glasses per 3D TV set, but due to the shortage of LG’s supply, the number has come down.

According to the customers, they have got only a few glasses with the set and they will be getting the other remaining sets after about a month, and this shortage is also felt for 3D Blu-Ray titles. On the other hand, one of the senior officials of LG said, “It is true that the supply of the glasses has not been without a hitch as the domestic demands have exceeded our expectation. However, since the glass-makers are quite small in size and mass production is a kind of tall order for them, we are thinking to increase the number of suppliers.”
LG's FPR 3D glasses

However, industry experts believe that this supply shortage of the glasses is making the promotion of LG’s Cinema 3D TV, which is very new in the industry. The new Cinema 3D TV is based on FPR technology, which is yet to gain much popularity in the market competing with its major rivals Samsung and Sony. This also could be its strategy of LG to be floated in the news as its competitors are in an attempt to develop their conventional SG (shutter glasses) technology, for instance, Samsung has recently joined hand with RealD Inc. to make possible the merging of passive 3D glasses with active shutter technology.

  1. Why should i replace Samsung SG 3D TV with FPR 3D TV until i do not get any drowbacks from SG 3D TV side. And i do not thing so Samsung will go with passive 3D glasses but may be Samsung discover a latest technology in 3D TVs.

  2. hi,

You misread, buddy.Nobody is forcing you for a chage of heart. It is just an open-ended choice before us now.And as you are with your Samsung SG 3D TV,this new FPR is really and eye-opener.Global 3D TV base is going to witness a sea change which is triggered by this new FPR (Film-type Patterned Retarder) technology.Let me be a bit technical here. When we talk about 3D TVs,prime factors are image and viewing angle. In FPR,the image seen through them has diminished flickering, cross-talk and image overlapping, which comes with a wider viewing angle.

And when it comes to 3D Glasses LG is far way from its peers.Samsung could be searching or starting from scratch to get a breakthrough but for the time being LG 3D glasses has great takers. The USP of these glasses is their feather-like weight and price. less bulky and cheaper. They look better and so easy on eyes.

    Thanks..
